Modalities and Research
Acupuncture
First, a person's condition is diagnosed by feeling their pulse, looking at their tongue, discussing their health issues, and palpating relevant areas. Then, based on a person's diagnosis, certain acupuncture points are chosen and the practitioner inserts very fine needles through the skin at the acupuncture points. Research has found that acupuncture can relax local tissues, affect nerve signaling and neurotransmitters, and help to regulate inflammation. It is also said to promote a deeply relaxed state, during which the body is better able to heal itself.
Cupping and Gua Sha
Cupping therapy uses a cup-shaped tool to create a vacuum, and is then placed on the skin to affect the underlying tissues.
Gua Sha uses a flat, round-edged tool to scrape the surface of the skin. These therapies are most commonly used on the back, but can also be used on other areas of the body such as the arms and legs.
Both of these therapies have been found to increase local circulation and immune activity, and decrease pain and inflammation.

Non-Insertive Needling
Also called contact needling, this is a very gentle method that is often used in japanese-style acupuncture. A metal tool is held on the surface of the skin to activate the points, and does not go past the surface of the skin. Other kinds of tools can be used to lightly brush or tap the surface of the skin for similar purposes
Chinese Herbs
Chinese herbs are most often used in combination with each other, in formulas. The herbs can be made into a tea from dried herbs, or they can also come in powdered, tincture or pill form.
Ear Seeds
The ear has its own set of points which correspond to different body areas and parts of the brain. Very small seeds are affixed to the ear with adhesive tape at different points. Like in acupuncture, these points also help stimulate the body’s healing mechanisms. These seeds can be worn outside of a visit in order to extend the effects of the visit.
